In a defensive battle of 2 winless teams, Jacksonville and Matewan traded sacks penalties and turnovers for 5 quarters. Our offense was sloppy and sluggish all afternoon stated Cobras quarterback Roger Staubach. If it was not for our terrific defense we would of lost this game.
We continued to bring the heat says defensive end Charles Hailey who recorded 3 tackles and 3 sacks. The defensive line continued to move and dominate their offensive line all afternoon to record 10 sacks in which 9 were by the defensive line. Linebacker Jack Lambert had 1. We knew with our offense struggling we had to do something Lambert said.
Safety Darren Woodson had a stellar game as well recording 6 tackles, 9 batted down balls and 1 interception. I just kept attacking the ball like crazy says Woodson. I knew I had to take up the slack when our defensive line started to get tired and give them a breather.
We had numerous penalties and 2 fumbles and a interception coach Barber said. This is not acceptable. Turnovers cost us in our game last week against West Coast and almost cost us today. Staubach fumbled the ball on our 2nd play of our 1st possession on our own 20 yard line in wich LB Arch Hentrich proceeded to pick up and run back 15 yards for a touchdown.
Then with 4:13 left in the 4th quarter Staubach proceeds to throw a interception on our own 16 yard line to who else of all people? LB Arch Hentrich, who again comes up with a defense play for Matewan. They then proceeded to kick a 24 yard field goal to tie the game up with 3:15 left in the game.
All the scores against us this season have come as the result of turnovers deep in our own territory. We cut down on those we win handily and dont have to go thru all the drama says coach Barber. This has to stop. This is not acceptable.
We attempted to win the game in regulation with a 65 yard field goal. The kick went 64 yards, it was just short. In overtime Matewan won the toss and promply went 3 and out on on 2 sacks. Matewon punted and we returned it to their 47 yardline. Staubach ran up the middle for 11 yards to get into field goal position. On the very next play we get called for holding for another 10 yard penalty pushing us back 10 yards. Staubach runs twice more and we are back in range again only to be called for another holding call pushing us back to the 31. We attempt a 3rd down pass and its incomplete.
Kicker Tom Dempsey lines up for a 48 yard field goal. ITS GOOD. Game over. We escape Matewan with a win. We got lucky coach Barber told his team after the game. If it was not for our defense we would be 0 - 2.
