Wk 17: Buckets Escape Pitt With Heart-Stopping Finish, 34-33
Pitt-
This game is killing me. Another thriller on the road for the Los Angeles Buckets ( 12-5 ) as they fell behind 21-0 to the host Pittsburgh Berserkers ( 9-8 ) yet rallied to take the lead in the 2nd half only to endure a heart-stopping finish to hold on for a narrow 34-33 win.The Buckets had been fooled earlier in the game when Pitt went for it on 4th and 14 from their own 12 yard line and caught L.A. sleeping (actually former Fluffy Pink Bunny coach Alex K. called in and distracted Buckets coach Jay T. as he chose a regular Punt Return). The daring 4th down play for Pitt paid off as he converted and eventually tied the game with a FG to make it 27-27.
So with only 2 minutes to play and still tied at 27 the Buckets called a Fake Punt at the Pitt 35 yard line and this time it was the Berserkers caught with their pants down as Buckets WR Monty Williams slipped behind the Punt Return coverage and dodged a would-be tackler for a 35-yard TD catch from Punter Buford Renee to put L.A. up 34-27.
But it wasn't over as Pitt drove the field, converting a few more 4th down desperations and busting off a long screen with 18 seconds to play to set up one last gasp at L.A.'s 11 yard line with only 4 seconds to go. The throw into the Endzone was CAUGHT by WR Paul Frase and the Berzerkers trailed 33-34 with no time on the clock. They went for 2!
Pittsburgh's ball on Los Angeles's 2 yard line. First and goal. :00 left in the fourth quarter. The score is Los Angeles 34, Pittsburgh 33. The pass from Pittsburgh's QB1 #6 Shelby Dalliafor was incomplete. The pass was intended for WR2 #81 Paul Frase. The PAT failed!
And that was your ballgame!
"That was a real tummy-twister!" Buckets coach Jay T. said. "One hell of a game. Turnovers on both sides of the ball. Momentum swung big time each way. We got lucky to win this one that's for sure!"
Thank for the GREAT GAME, Pitt coach James T.!
Cheers,
Jay
